I built something similar years ago with a motion sensor and an ESP32 to deal specifically with this issue. It seemed wasteful and I feared it could lead to image burn-in too.
The ESP32 runs a virtual keyboard that sends a space character which wakes up an old iPad whenever someone walks by.
